Fourth Grade Mixed Media Jim Dine Work

Fourth grade students also took a look at the work of artist Jim Dine. They used a mixed media approach (oil crayons and watercolors) to emulate the playfulness of his work. They got very creative with their use of mark and color.

  1. These are so beautiful. Do they use crayon resist or do they add the crayon on painted paper after it dries? What was the table set up like? THank you for sharing this beautiful work.

  2. Hi Alexis. Thanks for stopping by! They folded a white piece of paper into fourths and then drew with black crayon. They used colored crayons to add pops of color and finished with watercolor paint.

At a table seating four students, I put a tray of watercolor painting materials in the middle along with four black crayons. On either side of the table were two bins of colored crayons. I hope that helps!

  3. This looks like a great idea! Thank you for sharing - definitely going to try this out with the 3/4s. Would this activity work with regular white paper?
