Second Grade Ink Painting

Second grade students shared in this story last week about a wise panda bear named Stillwater. In the book, three siblings meet Stillwater and spend time together as he tells them three stories, all with life lessons to ponder. After reading and discussing this tale by Jon J Muth as well as enjoying the Caldecott-winning illustrations we talked about the word "zen" and what it means to be very relaxed and thoughtful with our artwork. Students are going to be making a zen artist's book (a different way to display our creative pieces) and they made some rough draft painting sketches in preparation. If anyone made a mistake, we practiced taking a deep breath and trying again. Mistakes just help us to learn! They did a great job and they can't wait to get started on the paintings for their book.
