Fourth Grade Elongated Self Portraits

Gracing our bulletin boards outside of the art room are the fourth graders' most recent pieces - a self portrait made in oil pastel in the style of painter Amedeo Modigliani. Modigliani's portrait paintings are characterized by elongated faces and bodies, which charge the pictures with emotions and cause the viewer to stop and take a longer look. Here are two samples of his work:


Now, check out some of the student work. I can guess who each one is without reading names - they used mirrors to aid in capturing the essence of their own faces.
