Norval Morrisseau and 3rd Grade Animal Paintings

Third grade students learned about the work of Native American artist Norval Morrisseau:

We talked about the importance of animals to the native people, the abstract shapes and colors found in his work, and the symbolic meaning of many difference species. Students chose an animal that best represented their own personality and then made a painting in the abstract style of Norval Morrisseau. Every painting was  very unique and the third graders did a great job keeping their animals abstract, yet recognizable.
