First Grade Still Life Paintings

Along with fourth grade, first graders took a look at artist Henri Matisse. Instead of studying his abstract collages, we took a look at his vibrant still life painting Apples on a Table, Green Background from 1916. We talked about what a still life painting is - a work of art depicting objects that do not move (for example: flowers, food, etc.).



Students created their own still life painting of apples as seen from a bird's-eye-view. First graders learned how to blend with watercolor paint, about warm and cool colors, as well as light and shadow. See for yourself:
